Crewel embroidery is traditionally worked on a
linen twill fabric with crewel (fine) wool using
surface embroidery stitches, but can also be
worked on lighter weight fabrics with a bit of
body to them using stranded cottons or silk.
Crewel wool embroidery is a
very forgiving style to learn and soon proves
addictive. Kits featured here all have good
stitch instructions for a beginner. Lazy Daisy
keeps a large range of tablecloths, doilies and
runners featuring surface embroidery.
